JEE Main and Advanced exams for 2026 have introduced several important rule changes and updates affecting eligibility, exam pattern, and candidate experience.
Key JEE 2026 Rule Changes
- An on-screen basic calculator will be provided for JEE Main (not physical calculators), making calculations easier during the computer-based test. However, this calculator does not include scientific functions such as trigonometric or logarithmic operations.
- Enhanced accessibility options including screen magnifier, text size adjustment, cursor trail, and light/dark mode are now available for better usability.
Exam Pattern and Structure
- JEE Main 2026 will be conducted in two sessions: January 21-30, 2026, and April 2026.
- The duration of each exam session is now three hours (reduced from three and a half hours).
- For Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), there are a total of 75 questions, while Paper 2A (B.Arch) has 77 questions and Paper 2B (B.Plan) has 100 questions.
- Marking scheme: Four marks for each correct answer and minus one mark for each incorrect answer.
- Syllabus remains unchanged compared to previous year.
Eligibility Criteria
- No upper age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2026.
- Candidates who passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2024 or 2025, or are appearing in 2026, are eligible.
- No minimum percentage required in Class 12 to be eligible for the exam, but admission to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs requires at least 75% marks for General/OBC/EWS (or top 20 percentile) and 65% marks for SC/ST candidates.
- Students must now enter their Class 11 Registration Number during the application process for data validation.
Exam Centers and Application
- 33 new exam centres added; 7 old centres dropped for 2026 session.
- Aadhaar-based exam center allocation has been introduced.
- Registration for JEE Main 2026 Session 1 is open till November 27, 2025.
Additional Notes
- Exam remains a computer-based test with percentile-based scoring.
- JEE Advanced continues with its virtual scientific calculator, which is more advanced than the calculator in JEE Main.
These changes aim to improve exam accessibility and provide a more streamlined experience for students preparing for JEE 2026. Make sure to check the official NTA website and the latest notifications for any further updates or clar or clarifications.
